On Page Optimization in SEO

On Page Optimization

In SEO two main process take place - On Page Optimization & Off Page Optimization. On Site or On Page optimization is the modifications done inside the webpage to improve the ranking whereas Off Page Optimization is the changes done outside the webpage in order to improve its position in search rankings.

For Google to easily crawl the webpages, the HTML is categorized into two parts- Head section & Body section. The Head section consists of the url, title and meta description and the Body section is the content of the respective website. Google first crawls the url and take a hint about what the website is about. Then it analyze the title, meta description and then the content. The webpage shown in the google search results is called the Snippet which contains the url, title and description. In mobile phones, additionally a logo or Favicon is also shown.

The methods involved in On Page optimization are:

1. Title Optimization

The SEO title must be impressive, attractive and unique with the relevant focusing keywords. The character limitations are 55-60 and the pixel width limitation is 5 12. When the title exceeds the given pixel width, google will show the exceeding character as dots which becomes unimpressive and decrease the number of clicks to that particular website. There should be a minimum of at least 3 words in the seo title and it not be in fully capital letters as it will exceed the pixel width limitation. When the seo title is not provided/irrelevant, the H1 or H2 tag given in the page will be shown as the title in the snippet.

2. Meta description Optimization

Meta description is a short description of the webpage shown in the snippet. It should be impressive, attractive and unique with relevant keywords. The character limitation of webpage is 155-160 and that of a blog/article post should be less than 155 characters as in article/blog post the date published will also be mentioned in the snippet. The pixel width limitation of a meta description is 1024. Click through rate(CTR) is the percentage of number of clicks divided by the number of impressions. Therefore by improvising the meta description, CTR can be improved.

3. Body section optimization

The most important part in body section is the H1 tag. It is the largest shown text in the body part and hence must be only 7-8 words. Only one H1 tag and H2 tag must be given. In the case of long article, more than one H2 tag can be provided. All the tags must be relevant to the content. The sentences written in the content should be simple and short as it will be difficult for the viewers to analyze lengthy sentences. Google's Reading ease score states that  depending on how lengthy a sentence is ,the reader tends to forget the first read words and hence make it difficult to understand the sentence completely. This will affect the overall ranking of the website.

4. Keyword Optimization

According to Old School SEO practice, a myth states that making the focusing keyword bold in a publishing page will improve the ranking. But google published a video correcting that making the focusing keyword bold will not improve the ranking. In that place making some words bold in between difficult paragraph will create easiness of the reader. They also added that making the focusing keyword bold will invite attention of the reader thereby knowing in advance what the topic is about. Furthermore adding the focusing keyword in the starting sentence itself will make more clarity to the reader. Keyword Density is the number of occurrences of the focusing keyword in the publishing page. Ranking in google is not based on keyword density, but the focusing keyword must be used at least one or more times for better ranking.

5. Image Optimization

Image optimization consists of the filename, altname and content. A relevant filename should be given to the image. Altname can be given same as the filename. The content must also be related to the image.

6. Anchor Text Optimization

Adding Anchor texts that create hyperlinks boosts up the crawling process of the page. The focusing keyword must not be added as anchor texts as it creates a recommendation link to another website using the same keyword resulting in the increase of ranking of their website.
